GALVEN BAGS COROLLA CROSS CUP AFTER PLAYOFF WIN OVER NICHOLAS

25/04/2024 08:30 PM

SHAH ALAM, April 25 (Bernama) -- Galven Green rolled in a 12-foot birdie in the first playoff hole to pip Nicholas Fung to victory in the 2024 Corolla Cross Cup at the Glenmarie Golf & Country Club here today after they both ended the final round tied at 13-under 203.

The 25-year-old overnight leader, who scored identical five-under 67s in the first two rounds to start the day with a 10-under 134, survived a two-stroke deficit just before the last three holes to complete the final round with a three-under 69.

Sabahan Nicholas, who started the day a stroke behind after carding 68-67 in the first two rounds, bogeyed the par-three 17th to finish the round with a four-under 68 and force a sudden-death playoff.

Although both golfers had good drives in the first playoff hole at the par-four 18th, Nicholas missed his birdie putt while Galven rolled his in beautifully from 12 feet to bag his second title in the Toyota Tour this year, having won the season-opening Tun Ahmad Sarji Trophy in February.

The victory saw Galven take home RM31,500 as the champion while Nicholas pocketed RM20,700.

“It was a tough front nine I would say and I couldn't really get going. It wasn’t my best (performance) and I am glad I got my game back on the back nine and hit some good shots.

“I had a lucky drive (in the playoff), hit a good second shot and had a great putt. I feel great winning… It has given me a lot more confidence going into the season, though we are almost halfway into the year, I feel good,” Galven said.

Meanwhile, Kenneth De Silva (66-76-66), Khavish Varadan (71-68-69) and Mohd Sukree Othman Rashid (69-68-71) were tied for third on eight-under 208 to earn RM10,200 each in the RM180,000 event.

Audrey Tan, who scored 75-73 in the first two rounds, bagged her first professional title despite a final round of four-over 76 for a three-day total of eight-over 224 to bag the RM10,000 cheque.

Tan Ying Ying (74-79-73) emerged as the best amateur when she shared second place with Amalia Shahzan (75-76-75) with a three-day total of 10-over 226.
