UAE WITNESSES LARGEST RAINFALL IN 75 YEARS

17/04/2024 09:55 AM

ABU DHABI, April 17 (Bernama-WAM) -- In a historic weather event, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has witnessed its heaviest rainfall on record in the past 24 hours, reported Emirates News Agency (WAM).

Surpassing any previous records since the beginning of data collection in 1949, the downpour affected numerous regions across the country.

The National Centre of Meteorology confirmed that the record rainfall, which occurred in the country over the past 24 hours until 9 pm on Tuesday (16 April), is an exceptional event in the UAE's climatic history since the onset of climate data recording. It is expected that the coming hours will see even larger amounts of rainfall being recorded.

The centre reported that the highest rainfall so far was recorded in the "Khatm Al Shakla" area in Al Ain, reaching 254 mm in less than 24 hours.

This heavy rainfall is an exceptional event in the UAE that contributes to an increase in the annual rainfall average in the UAE, as well as to the strengthening of the country's groundwater reserves overall.
