BANGKOK, APRIL 13 (Bernama) -- Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin today celebrated Songkran or Thai New Year in Hua Hin, north part of Thailand.

In his latest post on the X platform, Srettha said he hopped on a pickup truck to join the water splashing festivities in Hua Hin.

"We drove to Hua Hin this year to celebrate Songkran at Suan Phon King Phet park organised by Hua Hin Municipality.

"We paid our respects to the Buddha statue for auspiciousness on the occasion of the Thai New Year" he said today.

Srettha said Hua Hin was bustling with both Thais and foreigners having a blast splashing water.

"Songkran in our country is both fun and beautiful, filled with rich cultural traditions.

"I wish all my brothers and sisters a happy Songkran. Play safe and take care of your health," he said.

For the first time this year, Songkran in Thailand has been recognised by UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

As a part of traditional Thai culture, it is customary to welcome the new year by splashing water on each other as a cleansing ritual to wash away sins and bad luck, with the belief that this will bring good fortune and blessings for the year ahead.
