PUTRAJAYA, March 26 (Bernama) -- A total of 231 Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) students have been awarded the ‘Danasiswa Pelajar Cemerlang’ for maintaining a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.80 in the previous semesters.

Speaking at the Iftar Perdana UNITEN 2024 programme here today, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Majid said the award amounted to RM80,850.

“This contribution is given to students who are not categorised asnaf but have shown academic excellence and commitment.

“The UNITEN Zakat Trust Fund (TAZU) has allocated a significant portion of zakat funds to be distributed to eligible students to ensure they are not left behind in pursuing higher education,” he said.

Abdul Razak said 400 asnaf students also received Hari Raya tokens totalling RM280,000, reflecting the university’s concern towards excellent students facing financial challenges.

Additionally, RM69,000 from the TAZU fund was donated to 138 UNITEN and TNB staff members who met the eligibility criteria and income threshold.

“To assist them, the Jejak Sahabat Prihatin initiative has been introduced to identify those eligible for assistance in preparing for Eid celebrations,” he said.

According to Abdul Razak, RM58,600 was also donated to 100 general workers who have worked tirelessly to maintain the cleanliness and safety of UNITEN,  Yayasan Tenaga Nasional, TNB Research Institute, and Sultan Ahmad Shah Training Institute environments.

Meanwhile, UNITEN deputy vice-chancellor (research and innovation) and acting vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Zamri Yusoff, said that as of Dec 31 last year, TAZU had successfully collected RM99.33 million and distributed RM40.17 million to over 3,000 asnaf.

He explained that the establishment of TAZU is aimed at creating an alternative channel for zakat collection to assist eligible students in need.

Mohd Zamri also said that UNITEN has been recognised as one of Amil assistants in the higher education institutions category that has achieved the highest zakat collection via counters.

“UNITEN has been listed as an agent/Amil assistant qualified to receive the Incentive Campaign prize for its collections throughout last year,” he said.

Over 500 guests, including staff and students, attended the Iftar Perdana UNITEN 2024 programme, which was organised by TAZU in collaboration with the UNITEN Islamic Centre.

The event was held to celebrate the asnaf group by presenting contributions to excellent students as well as UNITEN and TNB staff members.
