Northport Sets Record For Highest Cargo Handling From A Single Vessel

KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 (Bernama) -- Northport (Malaysia) Bhd handled 48,853 freight weight tonnes (FWTs) of steel cargo from a conventional cargo vessel, MV Jin Chao, setting a record for break bulk cargo handling on a single voyage.

The new record surpassed the previous record of 47,246 FWTs handled by the vessel MV Wu Yi Hai in May 2022, said Northport, which is a port operator and member of MMC Group, in a statement today.

Northport chief executive officer Datuk Azman Shah Mohd Yusof said the achievement of the highest break bulk cargo handling for MV Jin Chao signifies Northport’s continuous commitment to meeting the demands of the market for the conventional cargo business.

“For the first two months of 2024, Northport handled a total of 1.88 million FWTs of conventional cargo, a growth of 9.7 per cent against the same period last year.

“Several key cargo segments contributed to this increased throughput, including chemical products, maize, iron and steel products and the Roll-on Roll-off segment,” he said.

Azman also said that the Reinventing Northport plan has yielded notable achievements in the past few years, including several record-breaking performances in its business operations.

In 2023, Northport set a new milestone after handling a record high of 11.41 million FWTs of conventional cargo.

This achievement surpassed its previous record high of 11.16 million FWTs, which was recorded in 2022.

Northport also recorded the highest monthly conventional throughput in October 2023 by clocking 1.13 million FWTs, surpassing its previous best of 1.08 million FWTs set in May 2022.
