SIBU, March 16 (Bernama) -- Police Constable Iskandar Zulkarnain Ibrahim, 28, who was one of the four individuals killed when a boat capsized at Batang Baleh near SK Lepong Baleh on March 7 was buried at the Kemuyang Muslim Cemetery here late this evening.
Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata and his wife, Jennita William, Sibu district police chief Zulkipli Suhaili and Kapit district police chief DSP Rohana Nanu were among those who paid their last respects at the funeral, which was attended by Iskandar’s widow, Anis Nur Ezati, his father Ibrahim Deraman, 72 and his mother, Zaharah Selamat, 68, and his siblings.
Mancha handed over the police flag Sang Saka Biru and some financial aid from the Sarawak police to Anis Nur Ezati after the funeral.
Iskandar’s body was found floating in Seputin, Batang Rajang roughly two kilometres (km) from where the boat capsized at around 11.30 am yesterday on the ninth day of the search and rescue operation.
Iskandar had been serving at the Kapit district police headquarters since Oct 25, 2021, and was with police sergeant, Jonathan Lambet, 52, escorting 35 kilogrammes of explosives for a road construction project in Baleh area when the boat they were on capsized.
Two other civilian passengers, Jack Balan, 45 and Amerson John Nain, 47, were also killed and their bodies were found more than 160 km away from where the boat capsized, while Moses Ngui, 47, was rescued.
Meanwhile, Anis told the media after the funeral that she would return to her hometown in Machang, Kelantan after everything was settled in Kapit.
“I would like to thank everyone involved from the first day he went missing until he was found and I am very grateful to all Sarawakians who continued looking for him until his funeral today,” she said.
Funeral rites were conducted at Jabal An-Nur Bleteh Mosque, Kapit before Iskandar was brought to the cemetery in Sibu at around 5 pm.
