JOHOR BAHRU, March 5 (Bernama) -- UDA Holdings Bhd (UDA), a leading property developer and asset management company, through its subsidiaries UDA Land South Sdn Bhd and Angsana Johor Bahru Mall, has taken proactive steps to strengthen environmental sustainability efforts through the signing of a note of understanding (NoU) with the Johor Education Department (JPNJ).

Its president and chief executive officer Datuk Sr Mohd Salem Kailany said through this strategic understanding, UDA together with JPNJ will take initiatives to implement activities that would raise awareness and responsibility towards environmental conservation and protection of natural resources, especially among schoolchildren and the local community.

According to him, the NoU which benefits both parties is also the basis for empowering training and activities in line with the Pelan Tindakan Pendidikan Kelestarian Johor as well as supporting the Johor Sustainable Development Plan 2030 (PPMJ 2030) at the school level.

"Through this joint venture (JV), UDA is committed to contribute to increasing knowledge and understanding of the importance of sustainable development and further building the capacity of educators and students in Johor," he told reporters after the NoU signing ceremony between UDA and JPNJ at Wisma SBBU, Bandar Baru UDA here today.

"What we expect from a JV like this will be an awareness of the need for sustainability practices and we hope that through early education at the school level, these people will better understand the importance of taking care of the environment because when we talk about sustainability, we are trying to give something better for the next generation."

The NoU was signed by UDA Land South Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Muhammad Ismail Dasuki and JPNJ director Mohd Hanafi Samad, and witnessed by Mohd Salem and Johor Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin

Mohd Salem said the NoU, among other things, focuses on monitoring the involvement and implementation of sustainability education programmes while coordinating carbon footprint of schools.

He said the effort coincided with the  mission of raising awareness, providing encouragement, and motivation for the best low-carbon practices and culture to education citizens in Johor.

He said through the signing of the NoU, UDA also handed over grants to four 'UDA Sustainability Schools' in the Johor Bahru district, namely Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kompleks UDA, SK Bandar UDA 2, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bandar UDA Utama and SMK Bandar Baru UDA.

He said each school received assistance amounting to RM5,000 where the school would utilise the grant to carry out various activities such as collecting used cooking oil and clothes, and planting trees or gardening and so on.

“The strategic partnership between UDA and JPNJ can also fulfil five of the nine Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are being implemented by UDA, namely Good Health and Well-being; Gender Equality; Clean Water and Sanitation; Sustainable Communities and Cities; and Climate Change.

"The effort also coincides with UDA's new branding which is LIFE, an acronym for Legacy, Integrated, Finesse and Enrich, which is applied in every UDA business network, and welcomes the desire to continue UDA's legacy by focusing on the preservation and conservation of the environment and emphasising awareness of the balance of nature's ecosystem.

He also said  that various programmes will be carried out such as the Johor Sustainability Education Award Day 2024, training workshops based on learning experiential learning, welfare activities through asnaf donations in the month of Ramadan to selected schools, and capacity building workshops for Guru Champion UDA involving teachers through four series of workshops on environmental sustainability management.
