KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 (Bernama) -- In a noteworthy event, 250 descendants of Penang's pioneer settler, Datuk Jenaton Raju Labu, gathered today for their ninth family reunion at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation at International Islamic University of Malaysia.
The advisor to the Datuk Jenaton Big Family Association, Prof Datuk Dr. Ahmad Murad Merican, highlighted the success of the gathering in reuniting family members from Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, especially since it was disrupted for three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"This ninth meeting was delayed by three years. It was supposed to have been held in Batu Bara, North Sumatra, (Indonesia) in 2020 but COVID-19 got in the way.
"This gathering serves as a celebration of our oldest living generation and to reflect on our family members, lineage, and the broader generational connection," he said when met by Bernama here.
Ahmad Murad, who is from the sixth generation, mentioned that the descendants of Datuk Jenaton have now reached the 10th generation.
The gathering was graced by the presence of the oldest member, Tan Sri Wan Mahmood Pa'Wan Teh, from the fifth generation, currently 94 years old, and serving as the President of the Malaysian Government Pensioners Association.
He said that the family gatherings were initiated since the third generation, around 2001, and the search for new descendants from the existing lineage is ongoing.
