KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 (Bernama) -- The Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) today signed a supplementary memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance the exchange of information, knowledge, and expertise in the field of science, technology, innovation, and economy (STIE) between both countries.
The MoU was formalised by ASM president Datuk Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen and KAST president Prof Ook Joon Yoo, with the signing ceremony witnessed by the scientific fraternity from both academies at the 2024 ASM-KAST Bilateral Symposium held here.
Tengku Mohd Azzman said that the extension of the MoU reflected their unwavering dedication to strengthening the collaboration between the two academies.
“As we renew this commitment, we aim to deepen the bonds of STIE cooperation for both countries. ASM is dedicated to fostering meaningful exchanges and pushing the boundaries of knowledge towards scientific excellence.
“The MoU allows ASM to work with South Korea (through) KAST, and we believe that there would be a lot of common ground that we can work on,” he told Bernama.
Tengku Mohd Azzman also mentioned that one area they would be looking at was planetary health, given the global climate change crisis and unsustainable practices that were harming the environment.
Meanwhile, Ook said Malaysia was a pivotal partner with a robust growth engine, especially in science and technology.
“With the extension of this MoU, KAST aspires for it to be a cornerstone for future collaborations, encompassing the exchange of scientific insights and the strengthening of networks among exceptional scientists who contribute to our shared pursuit of academic distinction,” he said.
The initial MoU was sealed on Feb 11, 1999, outlining a collaborative framework that primarily focused on promoting scientific and technological cooperation through various means, including bilateral symposia, the exchange of scientists, and the sharing of scientific publications.
To date, ASM has signed 16 MoUs with global science academies such as the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the National Academy of Sciences Belarus, and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
