MELAKA, Jan 4 (Bernama) -- The safety aspects will be upgraded immediately at the stretch of the road where a project to alleviate floods by widening the drain at Jalan Bukit Katil heading to the Pantai Ayer Keroh Hospital traffic lights interchange, to avoid accidents at the site in the future.
State Works, public infrastructure, utility and transportation committee chairman Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer said the upgrading of safety aspects was necessary to ensure road users can enjoy a safer ride along the contruction site.
“We will continue to monitor and investigate although initial reports claimed all safety aspects were adhered by the contractor including approval from all the relevant authorities, including the Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) Melaka.
"As an initial action, the contractor will install concrete barriers to enhance safety before any work is carried out in the area," he said after visiting the site, here today.
Media reports had claimed that a motorcyclist had died while two others were injured in an acident that involved three motorcycles that fell into holes that were still under construction, this morning.
According to the police, a stretch that was closed using cones by the contractor had been vandalised by members of the public and the motorcyclists are believed to have fallen into the hole.
Hameed Mytheen however, denied claims that the cause of the accident was due to lack of proper lighting.
"The flood mitigation project which is aimed at overcoming flash floods in the area due to clogging along Sungai Cina has been going on for about six months now. The project was expected to be completed by end of the month but we have to hold back due to the issues but lighting is not the issue,” he said.
