LABUAN, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG) has taken another step towards fostering responsible waste management and sustainability through its initiative that focuses on the 3R principle - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
Be Green, established in 2013, is one of PCG’s flagship social impact programmes that aims to create positive impacts on the society through education and collaborative recycling activities.
Through this programme, PCG recently organised a waste management competition in Labuan that saw the participation of four secondary schools from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Labuan, SMK Taman Perumahan Bedaun, Sekolah Menengah (SM) St. Anne, and SM St. Anthony.
The waste management competition featured three categories – Most waste collected, Most innovative products from recyclable wastes, and Best videos of their schools’ sustainability activities – and was carried out by PETRONAS Chemicals Methanol Labuan Sdn. Bhd. (PC Methanol), a subsidiary of PCG, in collaboration with the Labuan Corporation, Department of Environment Labuan, and Labuan Education Department.
PC Methanol’s chief executive officer Hiffani M Jalil said PCG is collaborating with local schools and communities in the areas where it operates to promote responsible waste management principles.
“With a growing global awareness of the environmental impact of waste, PCG recognises the importance of reducing waste.
“The 3R principle is an approach to managing waste effectively and sustainably, and the company has made it a priority to instill these practices in communities.
“PCG’s Be Green programme aims to create positive impacts on the society through education and collaborative recycling activities. By fostering a culture of waste reduction, reuse, and recycling, the company hopes to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment while also promoting responsible citizenship,” he said at the closing ceremony and prize presentation of PCG Be Green 2023 at the Labuan International Sea Sport Complex recently.
The programme features activities such as the organising of a waste management competition that educates students on the importance of reducing waste and minimising environmental impact.
It also continues to conduct community outreach through clean-up initiatives and awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging responsible waste disposal and recycling practices.
He said PCG would actively support and enable recycling initiatives locally, promoting the separation of recyclables from general waste, and advocating for responsible disposal methods.
“Throughout the Be Green programme’s waste management competition involving schools here, we managed to collect 5,200kgs of recycled waste, which includes over 3,800kgs of paper waste, over 720kgs of iron, over 507kgs of plastic and over 106kgs of aluminium,” he added.
Participants of the competition were also educated on the Plastic, Sustainability & You Education (PSYE) module which focuses on responsible plastics management and the importance of plastics circularity.
The PSYE module, developed by PCG in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and other partners in 2019, have been distributed to over 10,000 primary and secondary schools nationwide.
As part of the engagement, the module was shared with four participating schools and taught to the students.
Hiffani said PCG is always open to collaborative projects with local schools and communities to develop innovative solutions for waste management.
“We want to expand the Be Green programme to more schools to educate our next generation about responsible waste disposal, and I am pleased that through this competition, we witnessed the commitment towards creating innovative approaches in waste management.”
This initiative by PCG aims to foster a sense of environmental stewardship within the communities and supports PETRONAS’ social impact activation efforts on the environment (Planting Tomorrow).
It exemplifies the company's dedication to creating positive social impact and its commitment to the well-being of both the environment and the people living in the areas where it operates.
