Idfr's Korean Language Programme To Bolster South Korea-malaysia Cultural Diplomacy

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- The Korean language course offered by the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) provides an opportunity for Malaysian government officials and diplomats to further strengthen cultural diplomacy between both countries, representing a milestone in the institute's academic offerings history. 

The South Korean Ambassador to Malaysia, Yeo Seung Bae, emphasised the special importance of the course, as it is tailored specifically for government officials and diplomats from federal government ministries, including the Prime Minister's Office, Parliament, and state governments. 

The Korean language course, in collaboration with the Kuala Lumpur-based Korean Education Centre (KEC), will consist of 32 online teaching hours until Dec 7.

“As Malaysia commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Look East Policy, which facilitated the education of around 2,000 Malaysian government officials in South Korea, the new Korean language course at IDFR is seen as a continuation of this long standing relationship.

“I hope that for many of you who have encountered the Korean language through the vibrant worlds of K-Pop and K-Dramas, embarking on this structured journey to learn Korean will be an exciting experience. 

"This journey promises not only to enhance your language proficiency but also to deepen your comprehension of Korean culture and sentiments. With a broader perspective, I trust that you will be able to devise better quality policies benefitting the people of Malaysia and contributing to the development of the South Korea-Malaysia relationship within your respective domains," said Yeo during the opening ceremony, held alongside the newly-appointed IDFR Director General, Datuk Syed Mohamad Bakri Syed Abdul Rahman, on Tuesday.

Yeo noted that the addition of this language course at IDFR supplements the existing network, which includes courses at around 20 universities and three Sejong Institutes for university students.

Meanwhile, Syed Mohamad Bakri expressed support for such a collaboration with the South Korean government through the embassy. 

"In promoting cultural diplomacy, IDFR reaffirms its desire to enhance cooperation with South Korea in the cultural-training sector," he added. 

The KEC also offers programmes tailored to the general public. Currently, a total of 1,800 students across 26 secondary schools in Malaysia are actively engaged in learning the Korean language.
