PEKAN, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- The freedom to complete given assignments anytime anywhere without having to take turns to use a computer would be a dream come true for a student or an employee.
The dream can now be realised through the use of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure or Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) offered by an industry leader in providing digital solutions, H3C Malaysia (H3C).
H3C Business Development Director Adam Rahimin said VDI is a technology that enables flexibility in information technology (IT) infrastructure by supporting a remote or hybrid work model from a location with an internet connection.
“VDI allows its users whether employees or students to perform their tasks seamlessly on the app using their desktops, laptops or smartphones from any location with internet access, which creates a personal digital workspace.
“This transformation not only creates a safe work environment but also makes its users part of a mobile workforce that indirectly trains them to work efficiently even when they are not physically there,” he said while inspecting the preparation for the VDI Open Day at the Faculty of Manufacturing and Mechatronics Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) here.
Operating since 2019, H3C offers a full portfolio of digital infrastructure products such as computing, storage, network, 5G, security and terminals and provides a comprehensive one-stop digital platform including cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence (AI), industrial internet and information security.
On data security, Adam said VDI can increase security by centralising sensitive data in a controlled data centre environment, minimising the risk of data breaches and creating a more secure IT infrastructure.
“H3C is also involved in the provision of security infrastructure including firewall manufacturing, making security one of the most important elements of our technology.
“To use VDI, the application needs to be downloaded from the service provider and each user will receive an ID and password and their own profile. Only those who are given permission or authority can access the data on the server,” he said.
Meanwhile, Fortesys Sdn Bhd (Fortesys) Government Sales Unit Director Muhammad Hariz Ishak said VDI is not only suitable for use by educational institutions but can be used by various parties including government, private and business agencies.
For example, Muhammad Hariz said VDI can be used for record-keeping, as well as registration and data involving health, local authority matters, as well as libraries.
To enable users to gain full knowledge and experience about VDI, Muhammad Hariz said Fortesys works with H3C in providing training, support and strategising the use of VDI to suit their users.
Fortesys, headquartered in Selangor, is an expert in providing digital network solutions and has been in the industry since 2008.
Meanwhile, UMPSA's Chief Information Officer Associate Prof Dr Mohamed Ariff Ameedeen said the use of VDI at the university began in 2022 and involved only two faculties, with the implementation potentially being extended to more faculties.
“The implementation of VDI is in line with the intention of modernisation and digital transformation which is currently among the priorities of the university. So far, the implementation of VDI has gone smoothly with no complaints from students who are excited to be part of the development of technology.
“Students feel that VDI makes it easier and gives them flexibility because they can work on their assignments without having to return to the lab or class because the data on the server can be accessed anytime, anywhere,” he said.
Sharing the sentiment is UMPSA Digital Technology Centre Director Mohd Rashid Abu Bakar who described the use of VDI as facilitating lecturers in teaching and learning aspects, besides fostering a more interactive and conducive learning environment.
The use of VDI, according to Mohd Rashid, can also save the university's operating costs because there is no need to buy high-specification computers in each laboratory as VDI technology can be used in software-dependent laboratories that require high processing capabilities.
In addition, VDI also enables the monitoring process to be implemented more proactively and capacity enhancements can be implemented dynamically.
This can indirectly enhance the quality of teaching and learning at UMPSA, he added.
