Five Goals Outlined For Ppr Community Initiative On Zero Waste - Swcorp

11/10/2023 11:20 PM

IPOH, Oct 11 (Bernama) --  Targeting 70 per cent of premises in the 17 People's Housing Programmes (PPR) to implement the Zero Waste Community Programme (KOSIS) by 2025 is one of the five objectives of the ‘Sifar Sisa Bersamamu MADANI’ (SSBM) PPR community initiative under the Urban Community Sustainability Programme (PKKB).

Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) chairman Wong Kah Woh said the programme under the Ministry of Local Government Development (KPKT) through SWCorp also targeted a recycling rate of 40 per cent by 2025.

Apart from that, he said it also aimed to implement digitalisation in recycling, increase the income of the B40 group, as well as improve the well-being of the general population.

Wong said this when launching the initiative at the Simpang Perdana PPR in Taiping.

He said KOSIS was introduced at PPR Simpang Perdana in January 2020 with the involvement of 140 units, or 60 per cent of occupied premises.

He said as of August this year, a total of 11,746.25 kg of recycled items, 395.65 kg of cooking oil and 263.05 kg of food waste had been recorded.

"Indirectly, it can also increase the income of the B40 group by selling recycled goods at the KOSIS Centre while also encouraging residents to carry out recycling activities," he said.

He said the effort coincided with the core values of MADANI Malaysia, namely "economic, social and environmental sustainability through knowledge culture and diversity of views".

The initiative, he said, emphasised the concept of direct involvement and cooperation between the multi-ethnic PPR community and government agencies in an effort to create a culture of recycling.

Meanwhile, Wong said the establishment of the National Circular Economy Council last month was a high-impact initiative and national platform to unite all stakeholders to accelerate the transition of solid waste management from a linear economy to a holistic circular economy.

He said the initiative focused on six elements that supported the circular economy ecosystem, including developing markets and demand for recycled materials, designing recycled products, promoting waste separation at source, providing infrastructure facilities, developing integrated data systems and creating a public-private-community collaboration platform.

“Waste management in a circular economy concept has the potential to stimulate economic activities within the community through the creation of new business opportunities when the demand and market for recycled goods increase.

“These opportunities will open up more job offers in the circular economy value chain, such as design, rental services, repair, remanufacturing and recycling activities,” he said.
