PUTRAJAYA, Oct 9 (Bernama) -- Athletes from institutions of higher learning (IPTs) contributed 17 out of the 32 medals, including three golds, Malaysia won at the recently-concluded 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

The Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) said in a statement today that a total of 93 IPT athletes were in the national contingent at the quadrennial Games, including from Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia as well as several overseas students.

The IPT athletes also contributed five silver and nine bronze medals.

The three gold medals delivered by IPT athletes came courtesy of squash - in men's and women's singles and women's team.

The silver medals were achieved through aquatics; karate team Kata and individual; squash mixed team; and wushu events.

The nine bronze medals came from diving in 3-metre (m) springboard and 10m platform synchronised; women's team cycling sprint; artistic gymnastics; men's team compound archery; athletics 100m, 400m and 4x100m; and men's squash team.

At the quadrennial Games, Malaysia, represented by 288 athletes who competed in 22 out of the 40 sports contested, won 32 medals - six golds, eight silvers and 18 bronzes - to surpass the target of 27 medals.

The ministry attributed the success to its continuous encouragement and efforts with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, National Sports Council and IPT sports centres as well as through close collaborations with national sports associations.

"The ministry is committed to developing the students’ talent and be the catalyst for the national athletes to achieve excellence at the highest level,” it said.
