TANJUNG MALIM, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today visited the National Wildlife Rescue Centre (NWRC) in Sungkai, near here.
His Majesty was accompanied by the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah and the Regent of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah in the visit which commenced at 11.30 am.
Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
During the visit, Al-Sultan Abdullah received a briefing from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) officer regarding the operations of the NWRC and witnessed the wildlife conservation initiatives at the centre including Malayan tigers, sun bears and tapir.
The King also released a white-rumped shama (burung murai batu) as a symbol of his official visit.
The NWRC was established to meet the need to establish a rescue centre which is a temporary settlement of seized wildlife under the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008 (Act 686).
NWRC also focuses on ex-situ Malayan tiger conservation activities such as conducting rescue operations, rehabilitation, disease treatment and control, ex-situ research and breeding using the latest technology.
