KOTA BHARU, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Kubang Kerian in collaboration with China ultrasound equipment manufacturer, Mindray, has set up a sonography learning centre to optimise its students' knowledge in the field.

USM Health Campus director Prof Dr Shaharum Shamsuddin said the project known as USM-Mindray Sonoschool, was developed based on a memorandum of understanding signed in 2021.

"Through this collaboration, the university received four ultrasound machines, in addition to the renovation of a room in the emergency department of Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital (HUSM) at a total cost of RM1 million, which will be fully covered by Mindray, who will start teaching from today.

"This project is designed to give medical, masters and subspecialty programme students the opportunity to learn the field of ultrasound in a more efficient manner," he told reporters after the opening ceremony of the USM-Mindray Sonoschool today.

Also present was Mindray marketing manager Kurt Xie.

At the event, Dr Shaharum also launched USM's first book 'Point of care ultrasound' (POCUS), which provides a comprehensive guide to the use of ultrasound equipment for more accurate treatments.

Meanwhile, he said, USM is progressing from this year by introducing POCUS as part of the curriculum for fourth-year medical students.

Dr Shaharum said POCUS was already accessible to medical students since 2017, especially for sonographic and trauma-related examinations, and had trained nearly 300 highly qualified emergency medicine students.

He shared that POCUS USM has also actively contributed to conducting research and participating in the World Interactive Network Focused On Critical Ultrasound (WINFOCUS), the largest POCUS community in the world.

"We hope that the existence of the USM-Mindray Sonoschool will help the USM School of Medical Sciences to produce competitive and quality graduates," he said.
