IPOH, July 28 (Bernama) -- Quest International University (QIU) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HTM Pharmacy and DoubleTree by Hilton Damai Laut Resort to collaborate on its certificates of competency in hospitality and pharmacy.

The collaboration will benefit Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) leavers who choose to join the workforce right after school.

Global Integrated Training Associates Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Nicholas Goh in his welcoming speech said the QIU will provide skills training through specific modules designed with industry partners.

"This means we are targetting school leavers around the state who choose a different path instead of heading for diploma or degree programmes. This is for the recruitment of new staff.

"We will also have modules for existing staff. We want to bridge the gap between the industry and youth who are looking for jobs as in our programme, QIU and our industrial partners will together train potential employees,” he said during the MoU signing event here, today.

The agreement was signed by Goh, representing Global Integrated Training Associates Sdn Bhd, which is QIU's parent company, HTM Pharmacy’s talent management director Yap Tah Wai and DoubleTree by Hilton Damai Laut Resort operations manager Ikhwan Shah, while witnessed by QIU vice-chancellor Prof Zita Mohd Fahmi and Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.

Meanwhile, Rumaizi in his officiating speech said QIU provided an opportunity for students to find good jobs in their home state as it would help to reverse any 'brain drain' trend in the state while giving more opportunities to local youth.

"Our industries will benefit from having a larger skilled workforce. Let's take tourism as an example, it is excellent to have beautiful, exciting attractions but we must also have skilled staff to optimise these attractions.

"I am happy to see academic institutions like QIU working hand-in-hand with industry leaders and organisations to better serve our community, in fact, this was part of my vision to work with industry players, and universities. This cooperation will go a long way towards bridging the gap between the skillsets of our university graduates and the needs of the industry," he said.
