IPOH, July 18 (Bernama) -- A total of 6,400 mangrove tree seeds of the ‘oil mangrove’ variant were planted in Trong Selatan Forest Reserve, Larut Matang and Selama today, among efforts to conserve mangrove swamps as fish breeding habitats and to control coastal erosion.

The Department of Fisheries (DOF) said in a statement that this effort is expected to have a good impact in terms of the improvement and sustainability of fisheries resources for future generations.

DOF stated that this programme is also in line with the commitment of the state’s strategic land use planning policy which takes into account various aspects including the conservation, management and development of mangrove forest resources in realising the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG14): Life Below Water.

“It coincides with the ‘Mangrove Swamp Conservation Programme as a Fish Breeding Habitat’ in the state of Perak that we are implementing today. This is one of the programmes that contribute to the ‘Malaysia Greening Programme - Planting 100 million trees’ campaign at the state level of Perak,” said DOF.

According to DOF, this programme will be implemented every year in collaboration with other departments and agencies with the aim of educating and spreading the importance of ecosystem conservation in mangrove swamps.

Meanwhile, the programme this morning was officiated by Perak Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture and Food Industry Committee chairman, Mohd Zolkafly Harun,

Also present were deputy director-general of Fisheries (Management), Wan Mohamad Aznan Abdullah and Perak Fisheries Department deputy director Albert Apollo Chan.
