MELAKA, July 13 (Bernama) -- The Melaka Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) is aiming to market up to 1,000 metric tonnes of lohan guava in conjunction with the Visit Melaka Year (VMY) 2024.
Its director Hairudin Yunos said (with lohan guava brand) as a fruit icon in the state, the target is achievable through 32 guava farmers with a total cultivated area of 31.2 hectares.
“With this sizeable amount, FAMA has a number of plans that are currently and will be carried out before VMY2024, among which is a special packaging box to promote guava variety GU16 as the signature product of Melaka for VMY 2024.
“This box will serve as a souvenir or handout for tourists which will be filled with premium grade lohan guavas,” he told Bernama.
Commenting further, he said FAMA also plans to cultivate fruit farms in several strategic locations to enable tourists who come to Melaka to enjoy fresh fruit, especially the Melaka lohan guava.
“So far, we have established it at the Simpang Empat toll and will continue to build it around Ayer Keroh. At the same time, we will promote this lohan guava fruit in tourist hotspots such as Melaka Zoo,” he said.
At the same time, six fruit kiosks will be built in several tourist hotspots such as Melaka International Airport in Batu Berendam and the ferry pier in Banda Hilir.
“This lohan guava fruit will be the best souvenir for tourists when they want to return to their place of origin and this will indirectly introduce this fruit to their abode,” he said.
FAMA will offer cooperation contracts with major supermarkets and according to Hairudin, additional budget is also being offered to interested parties to help expand the lohan guava market throughout the country.
“We believe that this effort will raise Melaka's lohan guava to a higher profile and its popularity will soon be comparable to the sweet-smelling mango in Perlis,” he said.
