KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysia marched into the quarterfinals of the 2023 Asian Junior Badminton Championships team event in style 2023 by whitewashing India 5-0 in their final Group C match in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, today.
Mixed doubles pair Low Han Chen-Chong Yie Yu set the ball rolling after emerging victorious from a hard-fought three-set match 18-21, 21-15, 21-10 against Samarveer-Radhika Sharma in 55 minutes.
Eogene Ewe maintained the momentum by defeating Lakshay Sharma 21-14, 21-15 in the men’s singles to give Malaysia a 2-0 lead.
In came Ong Xin Yin to clinch the winning point by edging Rakshitha Sree Santhosh Ramraj 21-13, 5-21, 21-15 in the women’s singles after a thrilling three-set encounter.
With the outcome decided, Bryan Jeremy Goonting-Aaron Tai (men’s doubles) and Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting (women’s doubles) ensured a clean sweep by defeating their respective opponents.
The win ensured Malaysia advanced into the quarterfinals as the top team from Group C with six points since the Malaysian juniors had also registered 5-0 wins over Bangladesh and Hong Kong.
The draw for the quarterfinals will be conducted tomorrow.
Once the team event is completed, players will play in the individual competition from July 12 to 16.
