National Championships: Veteran Chi Wing Still Has The Magic Touch

06/07/2023 06:31 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 (Bernama) -- Kuala Lumpur-born Lim Chi Wing may no longer be a professional shuttler but the former two-time men’s singles champion proved that he still had the ‘midas touch’ to overcome his opponent in the fourth round of the 2023 National Badminton Championships, here today.

Despite losing the first set to national player, Ong Ken Yon, 19-21, the 15th seeded Chi Wing used his vast experience and kept his cool to upset the fourth seed in the next two games, 21-16, 21-15, to storm into the quarter finals of the tournament held at the Juara Stadium, Bukit Kiara.

“I had no pressure playing against Ken Yon and it seemed like my opponent was more pressured than me. I think my experience helped me to clear the third round.

“I don’t think I can match my stamina with the junior players but I just have to work smart and enjoy the game,” he told reporters when met after the match.

The 2016 and 2017 champion said he did not set any specific target for the tournament as he was looking to have some fun after missing playing in the court dearly.

Now that he is no longer active as a badminton player, Chi Wing said he had switched his profession by becoming a coach for juniors as well as serve as a sparing partner to independent players including 2020 Paralympic Games champion, Cheah Liek Hou.

In the meantime, Chi Wing believed a tricky journey lies ahead for him en route to reach the semi final since he is set to face another national player and sixth seed Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin, who edged Selangor’s Muhd Atef Haikal Muhd Taufik, 22-20, 22-20, in the other match.

Meanwhile, national women’s singles player, Wong Ling Ching, said the competition is still undeniably tough despite top seed and former world junior champion, Goh Jin Wei withdrawing from the tournament.

“If I managed to go to the semi final, I think Jin Wei will be my opponent but now that she’s not here I do believe that other players could give a strong challenge too,” she said.

Earlier, Ling Ching, seeded third, took just 19 minutes to oust K. Nilasha, 21-9, 21-10 in the third round and will take on her teammate Kay Xin Lee, who disposed another national shuttler, Tan Zhing Hui, 18-21, 21-16, 21-7.
