KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- Dignity for Children Foundation was chosen as this month’s National Press Club (NPC)-Macrokiosk Muhibbah Award for its efforts in providing holistic care, education and training of practical and business skills for urban poor children in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
Its Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer Petrina Shee Shiang Fei said the award will serve as a motivational boost as they meet the challenges of running various educational and vocational training programmes with other intervention and support programmes for its students.
"Moving forward I think that education must really touch the reality of life and our vision is schools without walls, and bringing children out into the world.
"We also hope more will come forward to help us improve the lives of these children who deserve a better tomorrow," she said during a press conference after the award ceremony at the Art x Dignity here today.
Since its humble beginning in 1998, with only one rented floor at Sentul Raya Boulevard, Dignity is now spread over several blocks in the same area and has helped 15,000 children over its 25-year history.
Today, Dignity is a learning centre with more than 2,300 children aged two to 18, providing holistic care and education for urban poor and marginalised children in Kuala Lumpur on two tracks, namely academic; from preschool (Montessori) to primary and secondary leading to Cambridge IGCSE (Form 5) or vocational training involving transformational enterprises in food, sewing, hairdressing, and farming qualifications.
Meanwhile, National Press Club (NPC) President Datuk Ahirudin Attan said the foundation was chosen as this month’s recipient for its consistency in helping the underserving community especially the children in safeguarding their future with valuable skills and education.
The NPC-MACROKIOSK Muhibbah Award carries a cash prize of RM2,000, a certificate and vouchers from top regional lifestyle tea brand Tealive, leading lifestyle fresh market brand Jaya Grocer and top natural yoghurt brand llaollao.
