PHNOM PENH, May 13 (Bernama) -- The following are news briefs involving Malaysian athletes at the 2023 South East Asian (SEA) Games here today:
e-SPORTS TEAM QUALIFIED FOR FINALS
The national e-Sports team are poised to deliver the first gold in the sport for Malaysia after qualifying for the Mobile Legends Bang Bang Open final at Naga World 2.
The Malaysians beat hosts Cambodia 2-1 in the semifinals today and will meet Myanmar or the Philippines in the finals tomorrow.
Malaysia qualified for the semifinals after winning all four group matches to finish as Group A winners.
MEN’S CRICKET TEAM LOSE TO SINGAPORE
The national men’s cricket team’s winning ways in the T10 event was finally broken when they lost to Singapore with nine runs in their Group A match at the AZ Group Cricket Oval.
The Malaysians scored 98 runs in 10 overs while Singapore scored 107 runs in 10 overs.
Yesterday Malaysia trounced Thailand with 53 runs in their first Group A match.
FIN SWIMMER YET TO SHINE
National fin swimmer Killian Ung looked lacklustre during the men’s Bi Fins 200 metre (m) event, finishing sixth out of eight swimmers at the Morodok Techo Aquatic Centre.
He recorded a time of one minute 44.94 seconds (s) compared to gold medalist Vu Dang Nhat Nam of Vietnam (1:38.32s).
Fellow teammate Chris Chew was equally unlucky, finishing last with a time of 1:49.47s.
WOMEN’S GOLF TEAM WIN BRONZE
The Malaysian golf team ended their SEA Games campaign with a bronze from the women’s team event after Geraldine Wong-Foong Zi Yub beat Yin Harmonie-Preap Brenna Lien 2-0 in the bronze play-off at Garden City Golf Club here.
National men’s trio of Malcolm Ting, Anson Yeo and Muhammad Hariz Muhammad Hezri lost out of a bronze, however, after being beaten 0-3 in their bronze play-off against Rayhan Abdul Latief, Randy Arbenata Mohamad Bintang and Amadeus Christian Susanto.
The men’s team failed to defend the gold medal they won during the last SEA Games in Hanoi, Vietnam last year.
FENCING PRODUCES TWO BRONZE
Malaysia’s fencing team won two bronze medals on the fourth day of competition through Cheng Xing Han and Hans Yoong in the men’s individual foil after crashing out of the semifinals at the Chroy Changvar Convention Centre.
Xing Han lost to Singaporean Samuel Elijah Eobson 6-15 while Hans failed to beat Sammuel Lopez Tranquilan of the Philippines, losing 9-15.
MALAYSIA QUALIFY FOR TWO TABLE TENNIS SEMIFINALS
Two Malaysian table tennis teams qualified for the semifinals of their respective events at the 2023 South East Asian (SEA) Games when they beat their opponents in their quarterfinal matches at the Morodok Table Tennis Hall here today.
Men’s doubles pair Choong Javen-Wong Qi Shen put on a great display and beat Vietnam’s Nguyen Anh-Nguyen Duc Tuan 3-1 (13-15, 11-5, 11-6, 11-8) while Alice Chang-Im Li Ying beat Vietnam’s Tran Mai Ngoc-Nguyen Thi Nga 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-8) in the women’s doubles event.
Unfortunately, two other Malaysian teams failed to advance after losing their quarterfinal matches.
Brandon Fong Jay Shern-Danny Ng Wann Sing lost to Ricard Gonzales-Russel Picondo of the Philippines (11-8, 4-11, 11-7, 6-11, 5-11) in the men’s doubles event, while Karen Lyne-Tee Ai Xin lost to Singaporeans Lin Qian Ser-Rui Xuan Goi 0-3 (7-11, 11-13, 7-11) in the women’s doubles.
SNOOKER, BILLARDS EDGE CLOSER TO GOLD MEDALS
Following Moh Keen Ho’s gold medal in the 6-Red individual event on Tuesday, the snooker and billards team now stand a chance to add more gold medals after men’s doubles combo Muhammad Almie Muhamad Yakup-Darryl Chia advanced to the 9 Ball Pool final after beating Thailand’s Preecha Boonmoung-Sompol Saetang 9-8 at AEON Mall 2.
Meanwhile, two Malaysian snooker players also advanced to the semifinals of the men’s individual event, Lim Kok Leong who beat Suriya Minalavong of Laos (69-22, 68-41, 130-14, 63-1) and Thor Chuan Leong who beat Singaporean Chan Keng Kwang (75-27, 35-60, 72-32, 104-0, 0-87, 78-35) in their quarterfinal matches.
MALAYSIAN KICKBOXER THROUGH TO SEMIS
Ahmad Nor Iman Hakim Rakib was the only Malaysian to have qualified for the semifinals of the kickboxing event after beating Dasdas Olsim Jerry of the Philippines in the quarterfinal match at Morodok Techo Sports Complex here today.
He won 2-1 in the under 69 kilogramme (kg) men’s event, while four other Malaysians, Raja Izzati Nabiha Raja Anuar (under 50kg women’s event), Damia Husna Azian (under 48kg women), Muhammad Amirul Adli Salee Meha (under 54kg men) and Insyad Rumijam (under 51kg men) failed to advance.
