KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 (Bernama) -- Media Bebas dan Selamat, Tunjang Demokrasi (Free and Secure Media, A Pillar of Democracy) has been selected as the theme for the National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2023 celebrations to be held in Ipoh, Perak from May 27 to 29.
Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Roslan Ariffin said among the factors for the selection of the theme was to give emphasis on the issues of media freedom and the safety of journalists in carrying out their duties.
“The definition of secure is not just about the journalists being able to perform their duties safely, but also being protected from legal action, harassment and intimidations which have become a rampant phenomenon around the world.
“We want to emphasise that in carrying out their duties, a journalist should be given as much protection as possible and not be intimidated in upholding the truth and carrying their duties freely,” he said after chairing the HAWANA 2023 coordination meeting today.
Roslan said various events had been lined up to enliven the HAWANA celebrations this year, including a treasure hunt, bowling competition and mini carnival.
The Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah has also consented to grace the HAWANA Dinner hosted by the state government on May 27, he said.
“On May 28, there will be an international forum involving journalists from ASEAN member countries. The highlight of the celebrations on that day will be the official launch of HAWANA 2023 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he said, adding that the preparation for the celebrations is now 70 per cent completed.
Roslan also described the cooperation received from other media organisations as positive with some having expressed intention to be directly involved in the organising of HAWANA 2023
“Some even proposed a seminar to enhance public understanding of the duties and functions of journalists.
“Apart from Bernama, other media organisations will also promote HAWANA 2023. In other words, HAWANA is an event involving all media outlets in Malaysia,” he added.
