Dropping three players from final squad my biggest challenge - Coach

07/03/2023 09:27 PM

PETALING JAYA, March 7 (Bernama) -- National women’s Under-20 (U-20) head coach Cameron Ng admitted that he faced a tough time to finalise his squad of 23 players for the 2024 Asia Cup Qualifying round which starts on March 10.

The coach said the current training squad comprising 26 players who had undergone centralised training had shown total commitment and performance but the coaching panel will give priority to players who can play in various positions (versatile players).

“It is the hardest part of my job because all 26 players have given their 100 percent commitment. Everyday the selection process differs but for the betterment of the team we will select 23 versatile players.

“From the entire squad, two or three can play in more than one position,” he told reporters after wrapping up the final training session at the Football Association of Malaysia’s (FAM) field,” here today.

Cameron said he was satisfied with the performance of the current squad and expressed optimism that the U-20 squad which is also known as Malayan Tigress would rise to the occasion when facing Cambodia on Friday.

The Malayan Tigress squad will leave to Cambodia tomorrow and open their Group G campaign against Cambodia on Friday before taking on Myanmar on Sunday at the Smart RSN Stadium in Phnom Penh.

Only the group champion of each group advance to the second round.
