Veterans football tournament in Penang garners participation of 56 local and foreign teams

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 9 (Bernama)-- The 22nd PSC-CHEETAH International Soccer 7’s Tournament, which will be held on a larger scale on March 4-5 this year, will see the participation of 56 local and foreign teams.

The organising chairman of Penang Sports Club (PSC), Dr S. Pandiraja said that the PSC International Soccer 7’s tournament has attracted a record number of 56 teams this time as compared to merely 12 teams when it started 22 years ago.

"This tournament has generated huge public interest with a large number of foreign and local players such as in Australia, Europe, South Africa, Indonesia, Maldives, Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines and Malaysia,” he told reporters here today.

He added that the tournament is a veterans football competition organised annually for the soccer stars of yesteryears who are still active in the game.

He stated that previously, most of the participating teams paraded many ex-internationals and ex-state players in their line-up.

"For the soccer enthusiast, this will be a perfect opportunity to catch a glimpse of yesteryear international stars from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, South Africa, China, Hong Kong, India and more. 

"In the past, former soccer stars such as Datuk Wira Soh Chin Aun, Datuk Santokh Singh, Vincent Thambiraja, Zainal Abidin, Khalid Ali, Alen Bajkusa, Thoon Chee Eng, K. Kanan and more have showcased their skills," he added.
