All raw sugar in Gula Prai brand sourced from Wilmar's Sustainability Initiative - MSM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 (Bernama) -- Refined sugar producer MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd (MSM) said the raw sugar in its Gula Prai brand products is sourced from Wilmar's no deforestation and no people exploitation (NDPE) sugar initiative.

Wilmar’s NDPE sugar initiative aims to make sugarcane production environmentally sustainable to improve the livelihoods of the people involved.

MSM group chief executive officer Syed Feizal Syed Mohammad said in a statement that he is proud that Gula Prai has remained as top choice among consumers and food and beverages industry players in Malaysia since 1964.

“To commemorate this achievement, the new Gula Prai consumer packaging will have the NDPE sugar logo,” he said.

To fully grasp the extent of supply chain visibility and traceability, a core attribute of the NDPE sugar policy is to ensure that sourcing is mapped out to all refineries with specific information to be readily available, Syed Feizal said.

He also said that the company continuously seeks to enhance its environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitment to food production to establish a stronger presence as an integrated sustainable sugar refiner locally and globally.

MSM is able to signify sustainability in its operations and business via this collaboration with Wilmar Sugar, the world’s leading sugar player and its NDPE sugar initiative. Most importantly, the initiative begins at the very first line of the supply chain ecosystem – raw sugar sourcing, he said.

As one of Asia’s biggest sugar refiners, MSM currently operates two sugar refineries, one in Prai, Penang with an annual production capacity of 1.05 million tonnes of refined sugar, Malaysia’s largest sugar refinery, and another in Tanjung Langsat, Johor with an annual production capacity of one million tonnes of refined sugar.
