Floodwaters rise to 1.5 metres at two Tumpat police stations

TUMPAT (Kelantan), Dec 22 (Bernama) -- Two police stations in the Tumpat district of Kelantan have been flooded to a depth of 1.5 metres since the floods struck the district on Dec 19.

Tumpat District Police chief ACP Amran Dolah said today the Kuala Jambu and Simpangan police stations were operating as usual, however, as all essential equipment had been moved beyond the reach of the floodwaters.

Nevertheless, he said, the people can lodge reports with any police station in the district.

“If they wish to come to the two police stations, they have to do so by boat. It is better for them to go to any other police station,” he told reporters after visiting flood evacuees at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Tumpat 1 relief centre, here.

Amran handed over contributions from the Supermas Supermarket to 126 heads of households among the 434 evacuees at the centre.

He said that as of noon, the 15 relief centres in the district were accommodating 4,716 evacuees, most of them from Bendang Pak Yong, Simpangan, Teluk Jering, Kuala Jambu and Kubang Sawa.

"My advice to the people is to evacuate immediately to any relief centre, even if it is far away, once the floods strike their houses because the relief centres are filling up fast,” he said.

Amran said the number of flood evacuees in Tumpat had risen because many houses were struck by floods after a bund in Rantau Panjang burst last Tuesday.
