MELAKA, Dec 15 (Bernama) -- A forensic investigation of the Melaka Public Works Department (JKR) finds that the field at Dataran Pahlawan was not designed for parking and unloading of goods.
State Housing, Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Zaidi Attan said as a result, cracks formed on the field in question due to the load, thus causing water to stagnate.
“Following that, there was water seepage into the building that housed the Dataran Pahlawan craft bazaar (in basement) below it, causing water to leak onto the chalk ceiling.
“In addition to this, the weight of traders hanging handicraft goods on the ceiling caused it (ceiling) to collapse,” he said after officiating an appreciation ceremony of the Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ) here today.
Zaidi said one of the measures taken by Historic Melaka City Council (MBMB) was to disallow the field from being used as a parking bay.
He said the authorities were also instructed to identify if the entire place could face another collapse.
He said since only about 20 out of 136 bazaar lots were affected in the collapse, the state government has not made a decision to relocate all the traders.
