KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- Fifteen local and foreign teams have confirmed their participation in the ‘1st International National Hockey Development Programme Tournament’ beginning Saturday until Dec 2  at the Bukit Jalil National Hockey Stadium here.

Also known as the Mirnawan Cup 2022, the cup is named after the former captain of the national hockey squad Datuk Mirnawan Nawawi.

It is organised by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) in collaboration with the National Sports Council (NSC).

MHC deputy president Prof Datuk Dr S. Sharmala said for the Men's Under (U) 17 category, the tournament has attracted five teams from the National Hockey Development Programme (NHDP) and three international teams, from India, Japan and Singapore.

While for the Women's Under (U) 14 category, five teams under the NHDP and two teams, from India and Singapore, are taking part.

Meanwhile, NSC director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail said the international meet was an ongoing effort by the council to ensure that the national hockey team was not short of new talents who could carry the country's challenge at the international level.

He added that the NSC had allocated about RM2 million to organise 12 hockey programmes this year.
