KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- National bowler Timmy Tan remains the country’s sole representative at the 2022 International Bowling Federation (IBF) World Cup in Australia after advancing to the men’s singles semi-finals today.
In the quarter-final action at the Suncity Bowl in Queensland, Timmy subdued former 2018 world champion and fellow countryman Muhammad Rafiq Ismail with a 2-1 victory.
Timmy took the lead when he roared to 223 pinfalls compared to Muhammad Rafiq's 196 in the first match.
However, Muhammad Rafiq then rose to level the score by winning the second match with 226 pinfalls compared to Timmy’s 187.
Armed with the fighting spirit of being champion at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines and the 2019 Asian Bowling Championship in Kuwait, Timmy proved to be in a class of his own after making 216 pinfalls, leaving behind Muhammad Rafiq with 197 pins and advancing to the semi-finals.
Timmy is scheduled to meet Germany’s Paul Purps in the semi-finals, with the German upstaging another renowned Malaysian kegler and 2012 World Cup champion, Mohd Syafiq Ridhwan Abdul Malek.
Syafiq Ridhwan lost 0-2 (185-217, 193-234) in another quarter-final tie.
In the women's singles, Natasha Roslan’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals were also dashed when she bowed out to Germany's Birgit Noreiks 0-2 (185-217, 193-234).
