KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysians go to the polls today to decide on the parties that will form the new federal government and the three new state governments in Pahang, Perak and Perlis in the 15th General Election (GE15).
Malaysians and the world await with bated breath for the outcome as 20,905,366 out of the total 21,173,638 registered electors cast their votes is what is dubbed as the most unpredictable election since independence.
Although there is no state election in Sabah, a by-election for the Bugaya state seat is being held simultaneously as it could not be held earlier following the proclamation of emergency to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.
A total of 38,348 polling streams at 8,958 polling centres have been made available to voters throughout the country, with the voting duration in the peninsula from 8 am to 6 pm and in Sabah and Sarawak, from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm.
After the dissolution of the Parliament on Oct 10, early voters had cast their ballots on Tuesday (Nov 15), where 212,961 or 94.7 per cent of the total number voted.
State assemblies led by Pakatan Harapan (PH), in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Penang, along with the Perikatan Nasional (PN)-led Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu assemblies are sitting out GE15.
Four other states had held their state polls separately over the last two years, with Sabah having its election on Sept 26, 2020; Melaka, Nov 20, 2021; Sarawak, Dec 18, 2021, and Johor, March 12, 2022.
Meanwhile, polling for the Padang Serai parliamentary seat which was postponed following the demise of the incumbent MP and PH candidate from PKR on Wednesday, has been set for Dec 7.
A record number of 945 candidates representing independents, coalitions and standalone parties submitted their nomination papers on Nov 5 for the 222 parliamentary constituencies, while 441 candidates did so for the 117 state constituencies.
