KUALA TERENGGANU, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Muslim Welfare Organisation (Perkim) will introduce an entrepreneurship course for converts starting in March next year.
Its secretary-general, Tan Sri Mohd Yusof Noor said this measure was among various efforts of Perkim towards eradicating hardcore poverty among this group of Muslims.
He said the course involving 120 participants including from Sabah and Sarawak for the first phase would be held at Institut Dakwah Islamiah Perkim (IDIP) in Kelantan which was established in 1961.
"At the last Perkim meeting, it was decided that the entrepreneurship course is aimed at taking out the needy converts out of poverty," he said after officiating at a Koperasi Perkim (Kopter) event, here, today.
Also present were Terengganu Perkim chairman, Prof Dr Ramle Abdullah and Kopter chairman, Datuk Mohd Jafri Abd Razak.
He said on average, there were about 1,000 converts registering with Perkim each year, with most of them from Selangor, Johor and Kuala Lumpur.
"Perkim is now drawing up various efforts to achieve the target of zero poverty among the converts in preventing them from being marginalised and towards improving their situation," he added.
