1,110 MELAKA RELIGIOUS OFFICERS RECEIVE ALLOWANCE INCREASE

MELAKA -- Some 1,110 religious officers in Melaka will enjoy an increase in allowance of between RM50 and RM200 effective October.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali said the exercise involves imam, bilal, noja and female funeral directors at 185 mosques throughout the state.

In a statement today, he said the allowance for imams 1 and 2 increased by RM50, from RM880 to RM930 for imam 1 and RM870 to RM920 for imam 2.           

Meanwhile, bilal and noja will now receive RM500 in monthly allowance following RM190 and RM200 increase, while the allowance of female funeral directors 1 and 2 has been raised to RM300 after the RM100 increase.

 COPS DETAIN BODYGUARD FOR POSSESSING CURVED BLADE AT UKAY PERDANA

KUALA LUMPUR – Police detained a 21-year-old personal bodyguard, who had in his possession a sharp weapon and a fake pistol, at a petrol station in Ukay Perdana early this morning.

Ampang Jaya district police chief ACP Mohamad Farouk Eshak said the suspect, who was riding a motorcycle in a suspicious manner, was arrested at 1.56 am. 

A check on the suspect’s bag found a ‘kerambit’ (curved blade), an object believed to be a pistol and a walkie-talkie.

“We believe he had kept the weapons and equipment for his work as a bodyguard to an individual with a Datuk title," he said when contacted by Bernama today.

Mohamad Farouk said further investigations found that the suspect had two previous records for drug-related offences, and he has been remanded for four days beginning today.

25 SCHOOLS IN PERLIS CHOSEN FOR GO DIGITAL SCHOOL PILOT PROJECT

ARAU  -- Twenty-five out of 104 schools in Perlis are selected to participate in the Go Digital School pilot project, said State Education Department director Naharudeen Othman.

According to him, 20 primary and five secondary schools will implement the digital application provided by a private company, ME12PAY Digital Sdn Bhd.

 “Schools can choose from 15 digital services, including cashless payments, purchase of recycled goods and attendance system,” he told reporters after the launch of the  09 Students Go Digital Go Cashless Programme here today.

 Naharudeen said the department hoped the utilisation of the digital applications in schools would reach 85 per cent next year.

KELANTAN MMEA DETAINS SIX VIETNAMESE FISHERMEN

PASIR PUTEH -- The Kelantan Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) seized a boat and detained six fishermen, including a Vietnamese skipper for encroaching and fishing illegally in the state’s waters during an operation yesterday.

State MMEA director Captain Syed Nor Adli Syed Ab Rahman said a patrol team detected a blue-grey boat which was moving in a suspicious manner at about 6.10 pm.

“They tried to flee when they realised the presence of the MMEA boat but were eventually caught at about 55 nautical miles off Tok Bali.

“Upon inspection, enforcement officers found about 1.1 tonnes of various types of fish and 500 litres of diesel. The boat and fishing equipment are estimated to be worth RM365,000,” he said in a statement today.

 He said the suspects, aged between  32 and 52, had no valid identity documents on them.

HALAL AUDIT TEAM OFF TO AUSTRALIA THIS MONTH -JAKIM

TAIPING -- The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) will send a team this month to conduct halal audits at the Thomas Food Industries (TFI) in Australia, which supplies meat to Malaysia.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Idris Ahmad said this was following Supreme Islamic Council of Halal Meat in Australia Inc (SICHMA) confirmation that TFI had violated protocols in the slaughtering process.

“Jakim would not compromise on matters involving halal status,” he told reporters after presenting donations to 136 flood victims at Taman Seri Kota Fasa Dua, Kampung Sempadan, Kampung Air Kuning and Taman Kuning Sari today.

On May 13, the approval granted to Malaysia’s halal-certified company in Australia, Thomas Foods International Lobethal, was suspended immediately pending a thorough investigation.
