GEORGE TOWN, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- To enliven National Day 2022 celebration, some 40 fishing boats took part in a special parade as they lined up the sea for a three-kilometre distance from the area around Sungai Gelugor Jetty up to Pulau Kazambo near Penang Bridge.
Sungai Gelugor fishermen's unit chief, Ali Hikal Saad said the main purpose of the boat parade was to give an air of festivity and merriment to the National Day celebration and also to foster a sense of patriotism among the Sungai Gelugor and Batu Uban fishing community.
"We started decorating the jetty by putting up flags since the last two weeks and the flags will continue to be flown there until Sept 16 for the Malaysia Day celebration," he told reporters after flagging off the Sungai Gelugor Fishermen Unit Jalur Gemilang Convoy here today.
He hoped that the event would be organised yearly for the National Day celebration as it is a much-anticipated occasion among fishermen throughout Penang, adding that about RM3,000 was spent to cover the costs of flags, boat petrol and food.
Also present at flag off were Penang Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director, Maritime Captain Abd Razak Mohamed and Sungai Gelugor Fishermen’s Unit deputy chief, Amirul Din Abdul Aziz.
