Sarawak has fruitful dialogue with Petronas -- Abang Johari

22/08/2022 09:49 PM

BINTULU, Aug 22 (Bernama) -- Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today said the Sarawak -Petronas Annual Strategic Dialogue 2022 held here today has been very fruitful.

Without elaborating, he said the dialogue had touched on the oil and gas industry in Sarawak, the role of the state government in Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS) as well as the collaboration between Petronas and SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd.

The discussion also touched on the Bintulu Additional Gas Sales Facility 2 (BAGSF-2) in Tanjung Kidurong which will supply natural gas to state-owned methanol plant Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd (SPSB) and Sarawak Energy Bhd’s (SEB) power plant.

“The facility meant a lot to us. That gas will be very beneficial for Sarawak’s downstream activities,” he told reporters after witnessing the Modular Delivery from Vietnam and Symbolic Handing Over of RM4 billion Sukuk ceremony at Sarawak Petchem Methanol Plant at Tanjung Kidurong today.

On the methanol plant, he said that within the last four months, the local and foreign contractors had constructed buildings and the important installations of the plant where at the same time local workers were trained in the production process of methanol and its technology.

“This will become the catalyst to our aspiration to establish a petrochemical hub in Sarawak particularly in Bintulu. Following the new finding of gas area, it is important we must have a roadmap to go downstream as far gas is concerned,” he said.

The premier said one of the areas that could be explored was the production of composite which is one of the important elements of aviation in terms of aircraft manufacturing due to its lightness.

Abang Johari said if Sarawak was able to do that it would be able to attract the people in the aviation to come and manufacture aircraft components here.

“Perhaps we can become the supplier of one of the components of the aircraft,” he added.

Earlier in his speech, Sarawak Petchem chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Husain said the methanol plant had achieved 60 per cent overall construction.

He also said Sarawak Petchem had managed to secure RM4 billion worth of sukuk funding for the plant project from various investors.
