BANGKOK, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- A 25-year-old Thai woman is the latest monkeypox patient in Thailand, bringing the tally in the kingdom to five.

Director-general of Disease Control Department Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong said the woman had traveled from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and was believed to have been infected prior to her arrival here.

“The woman developed symptoms before arriving in Thailand.

“Upon her arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport, health officials spotted the woman with apparent illness and later found a rash on her body.

“The woman was taken to hospital. Lab test later confirmed the woman is positive for monkeypox.“ he said.

Opas said the health authorities  have identified two passengers who are foreigners sitting next to her as close contacts.

“The health officials are locating  the passengers in bid to curb the spread of monkeypox,” he said.

Thailand reported its first monkeypox infection involving a 27-year-old Nigerian in Phuket, on July 18.

However, the man went on the run after being informed of the positive test result. He was later found in Phnom Penh and treated at a hospital.
