KUIPs preparing to acquire university status

KUALA PERLIS, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Kolej Universiti Islam Perlis (KUIPs) is preparing to be upgraded into Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin (UniSIRAJ).

Its rector, Assoc. Professor Dr Muhamad Rozaimi Ramle said KUIPs has so far successfully met two out of five conditions set by the Higher Education Ministry (KPT) in the conditional approval of upgrading as a university.

"God willing, we are working hard to fulfill all the other three conditions at the latest within the next three years," he told Bernama here today.

Earlier, he received a visit from Bernama head of Broadcasting (TV and Radio), Arul Rajoo, who explained the services provided by Bernama as the country's main news agency in conjunction with the 'Jom Kenal Bernama' programme.

"UniSIRAJ's permanent campus is to be built in Sungai Chuchuh, Padang Besar. The Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPs) is in the process of acquiring the land, and the construction cost is estimated at RM220 million," he said. (KUIPs is under the auspices of MAIPS).

Muhamad Rozaimi said the development of the UniSIRAJ campus, on 120 acres (48.6 hectares), is expected to commence early next year.

"We will offer some new study courses and now KUIPs is planning to offer postgraduate studies in some faculties," he said.

He also said that in future, KUIPs will try to offer at least eight study programmes at the doctor of philosophy and master's levels.

He added his team always collaborates with strategic partners to ensure that KUIPs graduates are able to meet the current needs of the industry.
