BIRMINGHAM, July 29 (Bernama) -- Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games news in brief on Friday:

SQUASH

------------

Two national men’s squash players got off to winning starts in the individual event at the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash Centre today.

Mohammad Syafiq Mohd Kamal was clearly a class above as he trounced Papua New Guinea’s Madako Suari 11-2, 11-3, 11-2.

Yuen Chee Wern, however, was made to slog by Kamal Cumberbatch of Barbados before prevailing 11-9, 11-9, 11-9.

TABLE TENNIS

-----------------

The national men’s team, buoyed by their 3-1 win over Australia in the morning, checked into the quarter-finals after downing Mauritius 3-0 in their second Group 4 match at The National Exhibition Centre here.

The national women’s team, who lost 3-0 to Australia earlier, revived their quarter-final hopes by brushing aside Maldives 3-0 in Group 3.

The men’s team will complete their group fixtures against Canada while the women will wrap up theirs against Mauritius tomorrow.

RUGBY

---------

The national rugby team suffered their second straight defeat when they went down 50-12 to Scotland at the Coventry Stadium today.

However, the national team managed to put up a better display than in their 46-0 loss to South Africa earlier in the day, especially when they managed to score 12 points in the first half against the Scots.

Malaysia will complete their Group B fixture against Tonga on Saturday (July 30).
