UBON RATCHATHANI (Thailand), July 29 (Bernama) -- The national fencing camp kicked off the 2022 ASEAN University Games (AUG) campaign with flying colours when it won its first gold medal in the men's individual foil today.
At the match held at Sunee Tower, Tengku Amran Sharif Tengku Muadzam Sadruddin, sparked excitement for the sport of fencing after defeating compatriot Akson Hydeer Natakusuma 15-13.
Tengku Amran, making his first appearance on the AUG stage, said the gold achievement will continue when he competes in the men's team foil this Sunday.
"With this success, I believe I can spur my own performance even though I feel I have done my best today.
"We also have a chance to win the gold medal in the men's team (foil) after this because we have a strong team," he said after his match ended.
The bronze medal for the men's individual foil went to Thailand’s Ratchanavi Deejing.
Meanwhile, the fencing camp was aflutter to land another gold medal but it came to a screeching halt after Yap Jing Xuan lost 11-15 to Thailand's Warisa Winya in the final of the women's individual epee.
Bronze went to Pacharaporn Vasanasomsithi of Thailand.
The national fencers will continue their competition tomorrow through the men's individual epee involving Isaac Seet Kai Xuan, Lim Jit Ian and Muhammad Aiman Najmi Mohd Zafril Rizal and also through Philippa Jean Ong Ziyi (women's individual foil) and Natania Tai Li Suet (women's individual sabre).
