UBON RATCHATHANI (Thailand), July 26 (Bernama) -- National swimmer Low Zheng Yong won Malaysia's first gold at the 2022 Asean University Games (AUG) in the men's 400 metres (m) freestyle event at Ban Yang Noi campus here today.
Zheng Yong clocked 3 minutes 59.57 seconds to defeat Indonesian athlete, Nicolas Karel Subagyo who recorded 4:01.85s to second place.
Fellow countryman, Welson Sim finished in third place with a time of 4:07.29s.
The sweetest success for Zheng Yong was being able to retain the gold medal won by the country at the 2018 edition held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.
Meanwhile, hopes of seeing a second gold medal from the national swimming camp were dashed after Goh Chia Tong finished second in the women's 400m freestyle event.
Chia Tong logged 4:28.51s took the silver medal behind Singapore’s Chan Zi Yi who won the event in 4:27.58s, while the bronze went to Indonesian swimmer, Prada Hanan Farmadini (4:28.68s).
In other actions, the swimming camp also added another silver medal through Ng Tze Ziang in the men's 50m butterfly event.
Tze Ziang recorded a time of 24:82s behind Thai swimmer Navaphat Wongcharoen who won the event in 24.79s.
Indonesian swimmer Joe Aditya Wijaya Kurniawan took the bronze in 25.05s.
