SK Kundasang first Kinabalu Geopark adopted school chosen for Unesco assessment

RANAU, July 21 (Bernama) -- Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kundasang has become the first Kinabalu Geopark adopted school selected for the assessment of Kinabalu Geopark as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) Global Geopark site.

SK Kundasang was selected as the Kinabalu Geopark adopted school in August 2021.

Its Parents-Teacher Association secretary Naiwah Arifin said the school was selected following the establishment of its Eco-Science Park in 2018 involving an initial cost of about RM400,000 contributed by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

She said works to beautify the landscape of the eco-science park which has an area of ​​about 1,200 square feet were carried out with the cooperation of several strategic partners of the school.

“Sabah Parks has helped us to set up a geopark corner at the park and plant herbs,” she told Bernama  during the final assessment tour of Kinabalu Geopark as a Unesco Global Geopark site, here today.

Naiwah who is also the Bahasa Melayu teacher at SK Kundasang said Kinabalu Geopark is now the school’s new strategic partner along with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

Kinabalu Geopark which covers an area of 4,750 square kilometres involving the districts of Ranau, Kota Belud and Kota Marudu, as well as Taman Kinabalu, was declared a national geopark on March 18, 2020.

Its recognition at the national level has qualified it to be listed as a candidate for the Unesco Global Geopark known as the "Aspiring Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark".
