KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- The iconic KL Tower International Towerthon Challenge (KLTITC) is set to return on Aug 14, after two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

JomRun Founder and Managing Director Chang Yi Hern said around 2,000 runners including some 200 foreigners are expected to participate in the race to climb the 2,058 steps, bringing finishers at a staggering 288 meters above the grounds of Kuala Lumpur.

He said that as of now, almost 1,000 participants had already registered for the race, complying with the rules of the Towerrunning World Association.

“We are glad to see the majority of our participants are Malaysians, as well as foreigners from Singapore, Brazil, Japan, and Germany. Our oldest contestant is 73 years old and the youngest is 11.

“We have taken precautions to ensure the safety of the runners to avoid any injuries. Runners will be running up one by one, and the winners will be determined based on the time taken to complete the challenge,” he said at the launch of KLTITC here today.

Meanwhile, Deputy National Unity Minister Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal sees the event as one of the ways to nurture nationality among sports enthusiasts.

"Sports involve all races from the organisers to participants, and it is one of the ways for us to develop patriotism among Malaysians,” he said.

Each participant in this year’s race is set to receive an event jersey, a race bib with an RFID timing chip, an e-certificate, personal accident insurance, light refreshments and a finisher's medal.

The registration is open till Aug 12, with early bird rates of RM80 for Malaysians and RM180 for foreigners.
