Samsudin Osman appointed as IIUM ninth president

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Bernama) -- Sime Darby Berhad chairman, Tan Sri Samsudin Osman, has been appointed as the ninth president of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) for a three-year term, effective today.

IIUM, in a statement, said that Samsudin's appointment, to replace Tan Sri Dr Mohd Daud Bakar whose term as the eighth IIUM president has expired, has received consent from the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, as the IIUM constitutional head.

Samsudin, 75, served as Chief Secretary to the Government from 2001 to 2006, and as chairman of the Employees Provident Fund for 13 years until his retirement in early 2020.

Meanwhile, IIUM rector, Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, in the same statement, said that Samsudin's appointment is expected to further strengthen the development of the university, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year.

“Armed with the experience of the public and corporate sectors, Samsudin will be able to bring IIUM to a higher level, which can be used as a guide for IIUM to forge more success and drive to become a highly respected university at the international level.

On behalf of the university, Dzulkifli also expressed gratitude to Her Majesty, as the university’s constitutional head, for giving her consent to the appointment.

At the same time, he said that IIUM wished to thank Mohd Daud for his contribution and service during his leadership as the university’s eighth president.
