KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 (Bernama) -- Yayasan Basmi Kemiskinan (YBK) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) to provide 647 hectares (ha) of land in Bukit Tasik Serendah, Selangor for agricultural and livestock development.

YBK chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Sakom said the effort is aimed at overcoming the food security problem as well as to persuade other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to join the government's call to grow their own crops.

"Currently, we are carrying out development only at the front of the area which involves 32 to 40 hectares. So the remaining 607 hectares can be filled by any party while waiting for the development to be fully completed," he said at a press conference here today.

Zainal said they have opened registration for any takers but will first evaluate the type of agricultural activity proposed.

"If the activity is suitable for development, then we will discuss whether they want to participate as a joint venture or enter into profit-sharing," he said.

The MoU was signed by Zainal Abidin and PPIM chief activist Datuk Nadzim Johan.
