Labuan Open Amateur Golf swings back in June

LABUAN, May 17 (Bernama) -- After a two-year lapse, the Labuan Open Amateur Golf Championship will be held at the Labuan Golf Club (LGC) course from June 17-19.

LGC president Datuk Gapilin Nasaruddin said the tournament would be the 29th championship for men and 22nd for women.

The organisers are targeting at least 112 participants, including 20 women golfers.

"We are holding this tournament again after a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This time we are targeting participants from Sabah, Sarawak, the peninsula and Brunei Darussalam," he said at a press conference at LGC yesterday.

He said as of May 15, a total of 106 golfers, including 18 women, from various clubs had already confirmed their entries.

"We are confident that the number will increase as entries are open until June 16, the eve of the competition," he said.

Gapilin said among the teams confirmed for the tournament are Keningau Golf and Country Club (KUGCC), Sabah Golf Association (SGC), Kudat GC (KGC), LGC, KL Golf Academy, Sutera Harbor Golf and Country Club, Sabah Golf and Country Club (SGCC), Kinabalu GC (KGC), Tawau GC (TGC), Tambunan GC and Staffield Country Resort KL.

He said eight players from Brunei Darussalam have also registered for the tournament but their participation would depend on whether their country opens its borders by then.

Gapilin said among the players who will compete in the tournament are Christopher Daniel James from Kudat GC, 2012 Labuan Open amateur champion Kevin G. Pius and Sandakan Open and Borneo Open champion Mohd Zariq Encho.
