KANGAR, April 7 (Bernama) -- Researchers from the Faculty of Electronic Engineering Technology (FTKEN) Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) have created a wireless Digital Al-Quran system to make it easier for imams to recite longer verses when performing sunat (optional) prayers such as tarawih, without having to lift a finger to turn the pages of the Al-Quran.

Prof. Dr Anuar Mat Safar, who is also the chairman of the Al-Arifin Padang Katong Mosque, developed the system, making the mosque congregation the first to use it during tarawih prayers this year.

FTKEN Dean, Associate Prof Dr Azremi Abdullah Al-Hadi said the project was a collaboration between the mosque, FTKEN, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Technology (FTKM) and the Perlis Islamic Religious Department (JAIPs).

"The system facilitates the imam, Ustaz Muhammad Khidhir Abdul Ghani to read longer verses and flip the pages of the Al-Quran while in prayer without performing large movements," he said in a statement today.

He said through this system, the imam would recite verses through a digital Quran projected on the screen and the movement of the pages could be controlled using a device worn on the wrist (wrist band).

Meanwhile, UniMAP Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Zaliman Sauli said UniMAP was committed to producing such products and services that could help the local community in the long run.

"It is also in line with the Perlis Go Digital initiative as well as giving the community an understanding of the digital culture," he said.

He said the system also has the potential to be commercialised and used in mosques, surau and homes.
