SETIU, March 31 (Bernama) -- Normally, young coconuts are plucked with the climber going up the tree using a ladder, but 19-year-old Mohammad Amin Abd Rahman does not need that to do it.
The man from Kampung Mangkuk, which has been declared by the state government as the first tourism village in Terengganu, can climb up a 10-metre coconut tree in only 15 to 20 seconds, others will take at least five minutes.
It is for his speed in climbing coconut trees that his service is sought after, enabling him to earn up to RM2,000 a month doing so.
Fondly known as Amin, the third child of seven siblings, said he started learning to climb coconut trees at the age of 14 to help his father, Abdul Rahman Dahat, 50.
“On average, I am able to climb between four to 10 trees and pluck between 40 and 100 young coconuts a day.
“The young coconuts are sold for RM1.50 each to traders in Setiu district and being the only young coconut plucker in the village, my service is very much in demand,” he told Bernama here recently.
Amin attributed his skill and speed in coconut tree climbing without the use of any support equipment to having done so since he was very young.
He said tourists who arrived in the village and saw him climbing the coconut trees were amazed with his skills and many would take the opportunity to take pictures and videos of him at work.
“I consider it my small contribution to promote Kampung Mangkuk, with the hope that it will attract more tourists to come to Terengganu and experience life as 'village people' and be with nature,” he added.
