Gamuda Australia-Laing O’Rourke consortium bags AUS$2.16 bln Sydney Metro Tunnelling Package

KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 --  A consortium comprising Gamuda Australia and Laing O’Rourke Australia Construction Pty Ltd has been awarded a tunnelling and civil works project under the Sydney Metro West-Western Tunnelling Package (WTP) worth AU$$2.16 billion (AU$1= RM3.04) by Australia's New South Wales (NSW) government.

Gamuda Australia is a wholly-owned unit of Gamuda Bhd.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, Gamuda said the project scope includes design and construct nine kilometres (km) of twin, metro rail tunnel between Westmead and Sydney Olympic Park; excavation and civil works for new metro stations in the Parramatta central business district; and Westmead Health Precinct.

"Others include earthworks, civil structures, utilities and connecting tunnels for a maintenance and stabling facility at Clyde; a precast segment manufacturing facility at Eastern Creek; and tunnel boring machine operations site at Rosehill.

"The WTP project is expected to contribute positively to the revenue and earnings of Gamuda group for the financial year ending July 31, 2022," it said.

In a separate statement, Gamuda group managing director Datuk Yun-Ling Lin thanked the NSW government for placing its trust in the group to deliver this critical portion of Sydney Metro West.

"We are excited to share our international experience in building high-frequency rail sustainably, and are focussed on generating benefit for communities in Western Sydney," he said.

Gamuda said early works of the project would commence within weeks, with tunnelling scheduled to start in late 2023.
